Web Information
This course uses the Web extensively. Internet access and a Web browser are required for:
- prelectures, checkpoints, homework (FlipItPhysics)
- your course grade book
- access to lecture slides and to other course information and notices
Computers with appropriate web browsers are available in Technology Services, Engineering Work Stations and housing division computer labs.
Required Materials
- FlipIt Physics (see instructions on homepage)
- iClicker Remote
- University of Illinois Physics 211 Discussion Materials, latest
- For Lab
Every student will need to have access to a recent Windows or Mac computer and to an IOLab device in order to do the prelab activities (done before every lab in your apartment or dorm room), and to design and perform experiments during your weekly lab class.
There are several ways you can get your IOLab device:- Students from last semester may be selling them. All red IOLab devices are the same, so don't worry if they aren't called "Version 2"
- Macmillan has an online store, set up specifically for U of I, at https://store.macmillanlearning.com/us/storefront/201801085. (Don't worry that the web-page says PHYS 101/102 and not 211 - it is available to all UIUC students). Note that they have iClickers available at the same link so make sure you select the right item.
- Macmillan has a rental program that will allow you to get a device for the semester for about $50. If you have questions their help number is (800) 936-6899.
- When deciding how to get a device, keep in mind that IOLab will also be used in Physics 212 starting in the Fall semester of 2020.
It is fine to share your IOLab with a friend as long as you can arrange things so that you can work on the prelabs by yourself and also bring the device to your lab class every week.
If you are buying or renting a device on-line you should do this as soon as possible since shipping can take 6-8 days.
Recommended Materials
- University of Illinois Physics 211 Lecture Notes (provides basic structure for lecture with space for you to add notes).
Optional Materials
- Gladding, Selen & Stelzer Classical Mechanics, W.H. Freeman (this is an inexpensive printed companion to FlipIt Physics, and is suggested but not required).
- Any edition of Tipler's book "Physics for Scientists & Engineers", W.H. Freeman (The Tipler textbook has a website with useful study aids: https://www.macmillanlearning.com/catalog/search.aspx?search=Physics%20for%20Scientists%20%26%20Engineers&sitesearch=1).
- University of Illinois Physics 211 Exams (many of these exams are also posted online).
