Exams

Exams will be closed-book. You will be permitted one sheet of 8.5x11 paper, with handwritten notes on both sides. Calculators and computers are not allowed. You may not collaborate with other students, or with any other human being, in taking your exam.

  • On-line section: if you’re in the online section, we will proctor you via zoom. The exam will be made available to you, on Gradescope, at the start of the exam hour. One of the course staff will watch you over zoom while you take the exam: you will need to have a webcam that shows your hands, face, and workspace. At the end of the hour, you’ll photograph your answers, and upload the result to Gradescope.

  • Conflict exam: if you have a time conflict, please make arrangements at least one week prior to the regular exam.

Exam 1

Exam 1 was Monday, February 21, in class.

If you are registered for the in-person section of the exam, but would like to take the exam remotely over zoom, please go to the Exam 1 Scheduling poll on Gradescope, click “Yes” to question 1, and submit. This must be done by 11:59pm, Saturday February 19.

If you have a conflict that prevents you from taking Exam 1 during the regular class hour, please go to the Exam 1 Scheduling poll on Gradescope, tell us the reason you need a conflict exam, and submit. This must be done by 11:59pm, Saturday February 19.

Exam 2

Exam 2 will be Monday, April 4, in class.

  • To take the exam online, submit the Exam 2 Online poll by 11:59pm, Thursday March 31.

  • To request a conflict exam, submit the Exam 2 Conflict poll by 11:59pm, Thursday March 31.

Exam 2 will cover lectures 15-18 (search) and 20-24 (Bayesian networks and HMMs). Lectures 19 and 25-27 will not be covered on the exam. Here is a sample exam (it is about five times as long as the real exam will be): Exam2 Review, and its Solutions.

Final Exam

Exam 3 will be Friday, May 13, from 8:00-11:00am.

  • To take the exam in-person, in 1002 ECEB on May 13, all you need to do is come to class. You may take the exam in person even if you are registered in the online section.

  • To take the exam online, submit the Exam 3 Online poll by 11:59pm, Friday, May 6. Please submit this poll even if you are registered in the online section.

  • To request a conflict exam, submit the Exam 3 Conflict Scheduling poll by 11:59pm, Friday, May 6.

Exam 3 will include one or two questions from exam 1, one or two questions from exam 2, and ten to twelve questions from the last third of the course (lectures 29-38). Lecture 39 will not be covered.
