Web Information
This course uses the Web extensively. Internet access and a Web browser are required for:
- prelectures, checkpoints, homework (smartPhysics)
- your course grade book
- access to lecture slides and to other course information and notices
Computers with appropriate web browsers are available in Technology Services, Engineering Work Stations and housing division computer labs.
Required Materials
For Prelectures, Checkpoints, Prelabs and Prelectures
- You can access the content at https://smart.physics.illinois.edu/ and you have full access for the first two weeks free of charge. Sometime in the first two weeks you will need to pay for access by purchasing a code through the UIUC bookstore. Details of how to pay for access are available via pdf.
For Lecture
- iClicker Remote. New or used any version, but not the phone app or iclicker cloud.
For Discussion
- A calculator with trigonometric functions.
- Paper, pen or pencil.
For Lab
- Every student will need to have access to an IOLab device.
- For students located overseas, it is recommended that you purchase an IOLab through the U of I bookstore if you don't already have one at
https://bookstore.illinois.edu/buy_book_detail.asp?pf_id=15132185. - For students located within the U.S., IOLab devices can be rented from the following website: https://store.macmillanlearning.com/us/product/iOLab-Version-2.0/p/1464101469.
(NOTE: Use the code SHIPFREE at checkout and the shipping will be free). - If you are buying or renting a device on-line you should do this as soon as possible since shipping can take 6-8 days.
- If you have any problems with the Macmillan website or concerns about the delivery of your device you should go to https://macmillan.force.com/macmillanlearning/s/contactsupport and select I am Using: Student Store (i.e. do not select I am Using: IOLab, which will get you tech support for the device itself).
- To run the IOLab software, students will need to have access to a computer running Windows 8.1 or above or a Mac running OSX 10.13 or above.
Optional Materials
- Gladding, Selen & Stelzer Classical Mechanics, W.H. Freeman (this is an inexpensive printed companion to FlipIt Physics, and is suggested but not required).
- Any edition of Tipler's book "Physics for Scientists & Engineers", W.H. Freeman (The Tipler textbook has a website with useful study aids: https://openstax.org/details/books/university-physics-volume-1).
- University of Illinois Physics 211 Exams.
