Greetings PHYS 102!
Exam 1 begins tomorrow, Tuesday 17 September 2019!
Remember the topics covered on the exam are:
- charges
- conductors & insulators
- Coulomb's law in 1 and 2 dimensions
- The superposition principle
This is approximately the first 3 lectures.
Make sure you take your time and read each problem completely before answering it.
The CBTF:
- If at any time you have trouble while you are in the CBTF, raise your hand and ask the proctor for assistance.
- If you haven't done so already please watch the orientation video: https://cbtf.engr.illinois.edu/index.html
- Remember your exam is 1 hour and 50 minutes long. Keep focused on your own work. Your workstation will be labeled with the end time for your exam.
- Make sure your calculator is in degrees before you begin.
- You are free to leave when you have completed your exam.
Grading your exam:
- You will have only one opportunity to grade each question.
- You may save as often as you need to.
- Use the Save Only button when you wish to save an answer, but want to go back and check your work.
- Use the Save & Grade button when if and only if you have a final answer and you want to grade it.
- You must save, you may grade.
Tomorrow our Exam 1 appointments with the CBTF start! Make sure you know your:
- Appointment day
- Appointment time
- Appointment room

If you're nervous, try this one minute paper before you enter the exam room:
Take one minute and write down everything you are nervous about right now.
flipitPhysics
You will need to get flipitPhysics access and do the first Prelecture and Checkpoint before you go to the first lecture.
- Go to http://flipitphysics.com.
- Click on the Register button, and create an account using your < NetID@illinois.edu > email address
- Complete your profile, then click on the Enrollments Tab
- Click on the Join a Course link and enter UIP102FA19
- Enter your NetID (e.g. whatever is in front of @illinois.edu in your email address) and click Enroll Course
You will need to join a second (FREE) FlipItPhysics class in order to have access to the course lab materials. The instructions below assume you have already signed up for FlipItPhysics as described above.
- Go to http://flipitphysics.com and log into your account, (or if you are already logged in just click the account link at the top).
- Click on the Join a Course link and enter code UIP102FA19_LAB
- Enter your NetID (e.g. whatever is in front of @illinois.edu in your email address) and click Enroll Course
Lecture
Students must be on time and prepared for lecture.
- No credit will be granted to students attending without their iClicker.
- Your iClicker must be working to receive participation credit.
- You must bring your iClicker and note-taking supplies to every lecture, including the first.
- Please register your iClicker in the student gradebook.
- Be sure to refer to the iClicker information page for more information.
Laboratory
Students must be on time and prepared for labs.
- Each student will need an IOLab device (see Required Materials for more details.)
- You will do a hands-on Pre-Lab activity using your IOLab device before every lab, guided by theFlipItPhysics Lab course you signed up for above. In your weekly lab section you will work in groups to design and understand experiments and experimental data, also using your IOLab device.
- You will upload your lab reports to https://my.physics.illinois.edu/courses/upload/.
Discussion
Students must be on time and prepared for discussion.
- Students arriving more than 10 minutes late for discussion will receive a grade of 0% on their quiz.
- For each discussion section (including the first section) you must have your:
- Laptop or tablet
- Paper & writing utensils
- Calculator
Excused Absences
- Please submit your excused absence no later than 12 business days from your absence via the Excused Absences application.
