Relationship between internal stresses and deformations produced by external forces acting on deformable bodies, and design principles based on mechanics of solids: normal stresses, shear stresses, and deformations produced by tensile, compressive, torsional, and bending loading of members; beam deflections; elastic energy and impact; multi-dimensional stress states; buckling of columns.

Big Idea:

Solid materials deform and break. The extrinsic relation of force and displacement is governed by intrinsic material measures of stress and strain. The challenge is to connect the extrinsic to the intrinsic.

TAM 210 or TAM 211.

There is no required textbook for this class. However, these texts are very useful

Communication

All class communication should happen on Campuswire (group code: 5129). If your message is an individual matter, please mark your post as "instructors only". If you are requesting an excused absence or extension, please use the Excused Absence Form. Students with DRES accommodations who prefer to contact the instructor directly via email should include in the subject line: [Student Name],[Course], "DRES accommodations". These messages should also copy a DRES access specialist.

Grading

The total score for the course is computed with the following weights:

Computer-based Quizzes (PrairieLearn)

Online Homework (PrairieLearn)

Discussion worksheets

Lecture participation (iClicker)

Final Exam

40%

15%

10%

5%

30%

Retake quizzes: Optional retake quizzes are available in the week following each first-chance quiz. If you choose to take the retake quiz, the quiz score will be 90% of the higher scores + 10% of the lower score (0.9*max(first_chance_score, retake_score)+0.1*min(first_chance_score, retake_score)). If you do not take the first-chance-quiz, then your score will be 90% of the retake score.

Quiz0: This review of statics is worth 0.5% of the total grade, and will not include a retake option or a quiz review session.

Discussion: Grade is computed as the product of participation and PL scores. The lowest discussion grade of the semester will be dropped.

Lecture attendance: The 6 lecture attendance grades (iclicker) will be dropped.

Online Lecture (Section ONC): Lecture attendance does not contribute toward final grades. The percentages shown above will be increased proportionally (by dividing by 0.95) to make up for the lack of iclicker scores.

The total score s corresponds to final grades as follows.

97% ≤ s < 100% A+ 93% ≤ s < 97%  A 90% ≤ s < 93%  A-
87% ≤ s < 90% B+ 83% ≤ s < 87%  B 80% ≤ s < 83%  B-
77% ≤ s < 80% C+ 73% ≤ s < 77%  C 70% ≤ s < 73%  C-
67% ≤ s < 70% D+ 63% ≤ s < 67%  D 60% ≤ s < 63%  D-
               s < 60%
