ENG 398 SJS - Social Justice & STEM Educ

Subject offerings of new and developing areas of knowledge in engineering intended to augment the existing curriculum. See Class Schedule or college course information for topics and prerequisites. Course Information: Approved for both letter and S/U grading. May be repeated in the same or separate terms if topics vary.

Section Description

In this service-learning course, students work in teams to create and execute lessons for underrepresented youth in local and Chicago area STEM education outreach programs. The course includes exploration of topics related to civic engagement, racial and ethnic identity development, stereotype threat and performance, structural oppression, inequalities in schooling, and the impact of racial and ethnic disparities in STEM education. Students must commit to 12 hours of field experiences, half of which will take place in Chicago on Saturdays (transportation to/from Chicago will be provided).
