Dear 534 students, Your Exam 2 scores have been posted to the compass website. The mean score was 26.21. The top quarter was 34 and up, top half 26 and up, and top three quarters 19 and up. Score - number of students 40 - 2 39 - 2 37 - 2 35 - 5 34 - 4 32 - 2 31 - 1 30 - 2 30 - 1 29 - 1 28 - 2 27 - 1 26 - 2 24 - 4 22 - 6 21 - 1 20 - 2 19 - 5 18 - 1 17 - 5 15 - 1 14 - 1 11 - 1 Also entered into Compass are your total scores to date, where the maximum points are 10 for the quiz, 20 for exam 1, 20 for exam 2, and exam 1, 10 for the quiz, and 7.15 for problem sets 1-5, for a maximum possible total of 57.15. All of those scores are listed below. With the final being worth an additional 40 points, it is somewhat difficult to predict the final grade distribution. But if I had to assign grades today, based on this noisy measurement, the cutoffs would be about the following: A 49 and above - 19 students A- 40 and above - 14 students B+ 36 and above - 9 students B 28 and above - 9 students B- 22 and above - 2 students C 10 and above - 0 students D 5 and above - 0 students If some more students drop with scores towards the lower end of the scale, it would lead to me assigning a higher percentage of higher grades than the above. That is, I would try to make the grade scale for continuing students neutral with respect to the number of other students who drop the course going forward. (In fact, that is why there is a slightly larger percentage of higher grades is listed here than after Exam 1.) --B.
