Dear 534 students,
Your Exam 1 scores have been posted to the compass website.
The mean score was 28.85. 12 of 60 scores were 40/40. So about
a quarter of the students scored 38-40, a quarter 30-37,
a quarter 22-30 and a quarter 11-20 (except for one zero).

Also entered into Compass are your total scores to date, where the
maximum points are 20 for exam 1, 10 for the quiz, and 1.43 for
each of the first three problem sets, for a maximum possible of
34.29. All of those scores are listed below. With only one
third of the possible points scored at this point, it is difficult
to predict the final grade distribution. But if I were forced to
assign grades today, based on this very noisy measurement of only
two short exams and three problem sets, the cutoffs would be
about the following:

A 32 and above - 19 students
A- 27 and above - 16 students
B+ 24 and above - 8 students
B 20 and above - 11 students
B- 15 and above - 4 students
C 10 and above - 0 students
D 5 and above - 2 students

If some more students drop with scores towards the lower end of
the scale, it would lead to me assigning a higher percentage
of higher grades than the above. That is, I would try to make
the grade scale for continuing students neutral with respect to
the number of other students who drop the course going forward.
