Project Proposal

Introduction

Statement of Purpose:

The purpose of project is to make a security system which acts as a number lock with additional features like infrared sensors and a slingshot/catapult. This lock can be used to protect treasuries. It can also be used as a safeguard in banks, jewellery shops, art museums, etc. Our security system will enable wireless connections so that it is easy to allow the user to include additional features with the security system.

Background Research:

From some of the research that was conducted by our group, it was discovered that most number locks are very singular in the variety of features they offer. As a result, we decided that including multiple features like the ones described above would create a number lock that would be most optimal. Some other features that we came by through our research were external cameras, alarms, phone alerts to owner and many others. We are now contemplating how to best combine these features for a well-functioning number lock.

Design Details

Flow Chart:

System Overview:

There will be a central system which will act as a hub for all the components of the security system to be connected to wirelessly. The IR sensors will be used to detect whether an unauthorized person has crossed the laser line. The catapult/slingshot will operate based on inputs from the central system. The number lock will check whether a person is authorized to enter. Additional features like alarms and other defense mechanisms can also be connected to the central system wirelessly.

Parts

Materials and Equipment:

  • Arduino RedBoard

  • Breadboard

  • Number Keypad by Arduino

  • 16 ✕ 2 LCD Screen

  • IR emitters and detectors

  • Wires

  • Resistors

  • Slingshot

  • Motor

  • Sticks

  • Pellets

Possible Challenges

It may be hard to implement this is real life. The IR sensors may not work properly to implement the wireless features. The slingshot may/may not have a good range. Additionally, as mentioned previously, we are finding some difficulty in deciding which features to implement so as to both make a better number lock and do it within a reasonable amount of time.
