Statement of Purpose

Create a smart mirror that displays customized information based on facial recognition data. This could be used in the front door of an apartment with the facial recognition bringing up info for each roommate. Information such as the user's calendar, weather, room (temperature/humidity) conditions.

Background Research

We wanted to create something useful and convenient and we saw similar projects and were inspired. We wanted something that was challenging but feasible and would improve our daily lives. There are many other smart mirror projects, but they tend to use a single monitor and raspi. We plan to integrate more sensors and possibly alternative displays (seven-segment, etc).

Block Diagram / Flow Chart

System Overview

Raspi: Raspberry Pi 3b or 4, controls the whole thing

Camera: Webcam or Raspi camera used for facial recognition

Sensors: Temperature, humidity, light sensors, etc. (might add more later)

Human Input Devices: Probably some buttons along the edge

Monitor: ~24" monitor used to show images on/behind the one-way mirror

Other Displays: Other displays like seven-segment displays or led strips.

Power Supply: Some wall power (USB-C or barrel jack style power)

Parts

Provide a list of parts that you may need for your project. You should include details such as the quantity, model number, purpose, vendor, and price (excluding taxes and shipping) for each part. This list may change as you work on your project.

Possible Challenges

  • Getting facial recognition to work reliably
  • Designing/building the mirror
    • Light seal might be annoying
    • Getting tools/materials will be challenging
