CS173: Missed Work

A variety of situations might cause you to miss an examlet or other work. When the problem is minor (e.g. brief), you should be able to cover it using the methods described below, especially the drops provided for most types of work.

Major problems

If you are experiencing major problems, contact the instructors promptly to work out a suitable plan. Ideally email both instructors. Examples of larger problems would be:

Depending on the circumstances, we may ask you to provide documentation (e.g. a doctor's note, athletic director note) and details (e.g. dates involved). You should typically be working with DRES, your advisor, and/or the Dean of Students office. In particular, the Dean of Students office can help you inform instructors when you can't reasonably do so yourself (e.g. you're in the hospital) and can provide confirmation of problems where you might not wish to tell instructors all the details.

Joining the course late

If you arrived on campus late or changed your schedule during the first two weeks of classes, you need to get caught up as soon as possible so that you can take the first examlet on time. Here's the schedule of the work you need to complete:

Missed Tutorial or Pre-Unit Homework

You have three drops for pre-unit homeworks and three drops for tutorials. These are intended to cover most normal things that can go wrong, whether they involve official excuses or mistakes on your part. See above for guidance if you have a major problem.

Save your drops until you actually need them. You don't know what will happen later in the term.

Notice that you have many days to work on each pre-unit homework. If you start it right before the deadline, you are gambling that nothing bad will happen. We will not give you a special extension because, for example, your computer broke at the last minute.

Missed examlets

If the exam window is not yet over, try to rebook your examlet at the CBTF. This is usually possible and does not require instructor permission.

If you cannot make it to your CBTF reservation, cancel it online if at all possible. If you just fail to show up without cancelling, you will need to physically go to a CBTF location to have them clear your old reservation before you will be able to rebook.

If it is impossible for you to take the examlet at any time in the regular 3-day window, fill out the missed exam form below. Do this in advance for planned absences (e.g. athletic trips) and as soon as reasonably possible after unplanned problems (e.g. injury).

If you have missed or are going to miss an examlet please fill out the following Missing Exam Form.

Note: You will need to be logged in to your University of Illinois Google Account.

We're expecting to see a compelling explanation for why you couldn't take the examlet during the normal window and we will follow up by email in a couple days.

Acts of God

We occasionally have outages in campus networks, power, or computer servers. Weather sometimes disrupts operations and occasionally even shuts campus. And so forth. We will extend deadlines or make other arrangements as appropriate when there are long or awkwardly timed outages. However, we expect that you will download critical documents (e.g. exam study materials) in a timely manner and that you realize that support is very limited at night.

Do not endanger yourself trying to get to campus when the weather is very bad and they are advising that people do not travel.
