CS173: Discrete Structures, Spring 2021

Welcome CS 173, Spring 2021!

This term, all lectures of CS 173 are sharing one web site because we will be running in sync.

Please look through the links above to get familiar with the syllabus and the tools that we'll be using. This page provides a quick summary to deal with immediate issues. See also information about registration and prerequisites, the honors add-on, and special situations.

Announcements

Add yourself to our piazza site now. The link is in the menu above. Piazza is our forum for announcements, asking questions, and so forth. It is particularly important to stay connected with piazza because we don't have physical meetings this term.

Classes

The lecture content will be pre-recorded and available on the lectures page (see menu above). The synchronous lecture periods will be used for weekly examlets and tutorial (small group) activities. Specifically

The instructor office hours the first two weeks are primarily for resolving practical problems, such as questions about course logistics, registration problems and disability accommodations.

Class zoom links

Zoom links for the final exam are on the exams page. Do not use the regular class links below.

The synchronous classes will be held on zoom. Zoom links for the various lecture times will appear here. You will need to attend the class time that you are registered for, so that we can ensure that each class has an appropriate number of staff.

Make sure that you are logged into Zoom with your U. Illinois (netID) credentials.

Particularly towards the start of the term, it's possible that we might need to update these zoom links. This page is the place to look for the current links.

Workflow for one topic

Here is the workflow for one topic. Look at the Lectures tab (above) to see how the sequence of topics fits together.

  Monday/Tuesday Wednesday Thursday/Friday Saturday Sunday
Week K Do the readings
Watch the video lectures
Tutorials Homework due (late evening) [nothing]
Week K+1 [studying and working on other topics]
Week K+2 Examlet

Homeworks and Tutorials

Study problems and the problems for the tutorials can be found on the Tutorials page.

You are expected to come to the tutorial class each week and make a good-faith attempt to work on the problems in your assigned group.

Each Saturday evening, there will be two pieces of homework due on moodle.

Most of you have been automatically added to the course on moodle. If not, get onto moodle, locate the course, and enroll yourself so that you do not get behind on the work. If you aren't yet registered, enroll yourself into the most likely lecture. (If it turns out that you guessed wrong, contact Margaret Fleck to transfer your grades.) To locate the course, either use the search box or look under the LAS college in the hierarchical tree of courses.

For the A and C lectures (combined moodle site), the self-enrollment key is "Dobby." For the B lectures, the key is "Remus". If the the key doesn't work, check that you are looking at the moodle site for this term and the correct lecture.
