CS173: Examlet logistics

This is a quick summary of how we plan to run the examlets. Although we may need to make small changes at the last minute, this document should help you know what to expect.

Arriving

Make sure you know

The exam lasts half an hour and will start at about

If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, you cannot take the exam at this sitting. If you arrived late to the first sitting, you can take it at the second sitting. Or you can do a makeup the next week.

Taking a makeup

If you need to take a makeup, arrive at 9:30 regardless of which sitting group you are assigned to. At the start of the second (10:10) sitting, come to the turn-in table to get your makeup exam.

Starting the exam

Before the exam, please wait in the building lobby (aka north of the room) until we signal that you should enter.

We will distribute examlets as you enter the room. Each examlet consists of two separate sheets, one white and one colored.

You may start as soon as you get seated.

If you arrive slightly late, don't panic. The examlets are designed to be doable in much less than 30 minutes.

Where to sit

You must sit in alternate seats. Because the room may be very full, avoid leaving two-person gaps and use the end seats in odd-length rows.

Please avoid sitting next to close friends. Other students may misinterpret your normal friendly behavior as cheating.

Please sit in a chair, not on the floor or on the radiator, unless we actually run out of alternate seats. If you are one of the first in your row, please sit towards the middle. As your row fills up, please be polite and shift inwards as needed.

If you are lefthanded, there are only a couple seats with lefthanded desks. You'll have to improvise with the righthanded ones. There may be a supply of lapdesks near the northwest entrance.

During the exam

If you need help, e.g. an injury requires you to have an aisle seat, don't be shy. The proctors will be happy to help.

There are multiple versions of each sheet. I won't say how many. This varies with the examlet and isn't determined until the last minute. They are similar in difficulty but not exactly comparable. Over the course of the term, random selection will give you some easier versions and some harder ones.

Please raise your hand to get help/advice if you need clarification or think you've found a bug in the exam.

Problems during an examlet

Suppose you realize during an exam that you are sick or have an emergency need to use the restroom. In this case, give your partial work to the proctors, explaining that you are sick. We will arrange for you to do a makeup, just as if you had missed the examlet.

If you have a minor problem during an exam but feel it is best to keep working, email the instructor promptly after the exam. This can sometimes affect your grade if you end the term right below a grade boundary. However, this must be done promptly, not (for example) at the end of the term.

At the end

When you are done, turn in your sheets at the front of the room. All colored sheets go in the same pile. All white sheets go in the other pile. Make sure each sheet has your name and netID written (readably!) and that you've circled your discussion section on both. Then take your stuff and exit the room.
