Format guidelines for Written Homework

Homeworks for CS 173 must meet the following guidelines. They are intended to help you develop good mathematical style and to allow us to grade homeworks in a sensible manner. If you don't make a good-faith attempt to follow them, we reserve the right to take off lots of points or (in extreme case) give you a zero for the homework.

  1. Homework should be written on paper that's approximately 8.5 by 11 inches. Not, for example, half-size pieces of paper.
  2. All problems should be stapled together.
  3. Make sure the following information is clearly visible, and legible, near the top of the first sheet:
  4. It is not necessary to quote back the problem you are solving. Your solution is sufficient.
  5. Make sure your solutions are legible (see below) and leave sufficient space for grader comments.

We want both your name and netid to provide redundancy when two people have similar names and/or it's hard to read what you wrote. This is especially important at the start of term when we aren't familiar with your names and handwriting.

Homeworks don't have to be models of great penmanship and formatting, but they must be neat enough that we can read them without undue effort. The writing must be legible, including dark enough and large enough. If you can't write legibly, use a text formatting package. We strongly recommend LaTeX, which is heavily used in advanced CS classes. Leave enough blank space for us to write comments. Don't attempt to cram answers into the blank space on a printout of the homework problems.
