How to interpret your score on the first quiz ============================================= Caveats: 1) Scores on short quizzes are low precision, so grade estimates are very imprecise. 2) Grade breaks are intended as estimates of your final course grade. Since quiz 1 scores tend to run high, this involves some curving downwards. Don't worry: by the time we get to the final averages, we'll be curving upwards (i.e. in your favor). 3) The main point of a quiz is to diagnose problems that you need to address before you take the midterm. 234 people took the quiz. Scores ranged from 6 to 20 out of 20. The mean was 16.3 and the median 17. Approximate grade breaks: >= 19 A >= 17 B >= 14 C >= 12 D <= 11 [uh oh] If you got an [uh oh] or a score that's lower than you feel you could have gotten, you need to figure out what went wrong. Sometimes the cause is obvious, e.g. you stayed up until 2am working on a Physics homework and were half asleep at the quiz. Then you know what you need to do. If the cause is less obvious, feel free to talk to the course staff if you need help. Margaret
