How to interpret your score on the first midterm ================================================ 149 people took the exam Scores ranged from 12.5 to 50 out of a possible 50 points The median score was 40 and the mean 38.6 Approximate letter grade cutoffs >= 45 A >= 40 B >= 34.5 C >= 25 D < 25 F You should view the top three grade breaks as only approximate predictors of your final grade, since it's so easy to gain/lose a point or two. When I set the cutoff for a C, both for this exam and at the end of the term, I look not only at the raw score but also whether you can do an ok job of key tasks such as writing a direct proof (question 6), writing an inductive proof (by the final exam), and doing a simple algorithm analysis (which we'll see in a couple weeks). These are the skills assumed by the next couple CS courses. The scores change quite fast around the D/F boundary. If your score is below 25, you're in serious trouble. But there are many possible reasons behind a low score on one exam. You should consult with me and/or the academic office, so you can either make a plan for improving how you're doing (which is definitely still possible at this stage) or dropping the class. If you got behind for some known reason (e.g. illness), perhaps you just need to get fully caught up. If you haven't been attending lecture and/or discussion section, perhaps you should.
