Subject offerings of new and developing areas of knowledge in theoretical and applied mechanics intended to augment the existing curriculum. See Class Schedule or departmental course information for topics and prerequisites. Course Information: 1 to 4 undergraduate hours. 1 to 4 graduate hours. May be repeated in the same or separate terms if topics vary to a maximum of 9 undergraduate hours or 12 graduate hours.
Section Description
- The principles of Engineering Materials (ME 330) are taught from an equilibrium perspective. But real engineering applications often subject materials, components, and structures to extreme conditions including high strain rates, corrosion or hydrogen, radiation, high pressure, or microgravity. These environments can alter the compositions and microstructures of materials, causing severe degradation to the properties, mechanics, and performance of components. This course will review these critical degradation and failure modes of engineering materials, examine theories and models for the altered material mechanics in extreme environments, and evaluate how codes and standards account for material degradation and evolution in extreme service environments. Students will carry out a semester-long project focusing on a degradation mode or extreme environment of their choice. Prerequisite is ME 330 or equivalent.
