Introduction

This course is Physics 580-581, which will cover Quantum Mechanics at the graduate level. The course is intended to bring the knowledge and expertise of physics graduate students up to a modern level, either as a stand-alone course or as preparation for more advanced courses offered in the Department, such as Quantum Field Theory. The course will cover all of the basic quantum mechanical material, in a modern mathematically informed fashion. In addition, introductions to topics of current research interest, such as quantum entanglement and quantum information theory, will be given.

There is no required textbook for the course, but a good choice of supplementary text would be Principles of Quantum Mechanics, 2nd ed. by R. Shankar and/or Modern Quantum Mechanics, Rev. ed. by J.J. Sakurai. These and several other texts are on reserve at the Grainger Library. Shankar is also available for electronic access at the University Library website. Additional supplementary material may be made available on the 580 website from time to time.
