Physics 436 Advanced Electromagnetism II

Hour Exam II

Our second (and last) Phys 436 Hour Exam will take place during class time next Wednesday, Apr. 14 (see the course syllabus). The exam will cover sections 8.1.1 - 10.2.1 of Griffiths, i.e., Lectures 1-19.

Like last time, the exam will be open book, meaning you can use any static print materials including the text, printouts of lecture notes, homeworks, or a pre-prepared equation sheet of your own making. Electronic devices of any sort are not permitted (except whatever you are using for proctoring by CBTF). Calculators are neither allowed or needed.

The exam will be proctored by CBTF using Gradescope. As last time, please do the following:

1. Register for the exam at https://cbtf.engr.illinois.edu/sched .

2. Reserve an exam time. If you have a schedule conflict, you can request to take a conflict exam. If you do this please also email me directly since the system does not send me notifications and I have to go in and review the request manually.

3. Review the Student Guide for instructions on how to login and take the exam: https://cbtf.engr.illinois.edu/cbtf-online/students .

Hour Exam I

The first Phys 436 Hour Exam will take place during class time next Wednesday, Mar. 10 (see the course syllabus). The exam will cover sections 8.1.1 - 9.3.3 of Griffiths, i.e., Lectures 1-11.

The exam will be open book, meaning you can use any static print materials including the text, printouts of lecture notes, homeworks, or a pre-prepared equation sheet of your own making. Electronic devices of any sort are not permitted (except whatever you are using for proctoring by CBTF). Calculators are neither allowed or needed.

Welcome to Physics 436! Class starts on Monday, Jan. 25, 2021 in 141 Loomis.

Phys 436 is the second semester of a year-long course in Classical Electrodynamics. The focus of 435 was to define the basic structure of E&M culminating in the writing down of Maxwell's equations. In Phys 436 we will use E&M to define conservations laws for energy and momentum, derive the existence and propagation of electromagnetic waves, compute how light scatters from interfaces, and learn about the dispersion of optical constants (epsilon and mu) and the behavior of wave guides and transmission lines, among other topics. Finally, we will show how special relativitiy follows logically from Maxwell's equations, and how concepts like relativistic length contraction are required to make sense of conservation of linear electromagnetic momentum.
