Announcements

The 435 Final Exam ...

... will take place at the CBTF on "in class" on Wednesday, Dec. 16, from 7-10 pm. The exam will cover the first half of Griffiths, Chs. 1-7 (Lectures 1-36). The exam will be comprehensive, covering all content in the course, but will emphasize material you saw as part of a homework or discussion problem. The exam will be open book, meaning you can use any static print materials including the text, printouts of lecture notes, homeworks, or a pre-prepared equation sheet of your own making. Electronic devices of any sort are not permitted. Calculators will be neither allowed or needed. The style an format of the exam will be similar to the three hour exams. The exam will be proctored by CBTF using Gradescope. As for the hour exams, please do the following:

1. Register for the exam at https://cbtf.engr.illinois.edu/sched . Several conflict exams are available for people in other time zones or who need other accommodations.

2. Reserve an exam time. If you have a schedule conflict, you can request to take a conflict exam. If you do this please also email me directly since the system does not send me notifications and I have to go in and review the request manually.

Welcome to Physics 435! This is the first semester of a year-long course in Classical Electrodynamics. In this course we will discuss the formal development of Maxwell's equations, boundary value problems, work and energy, fields in media, etc. Note that E&M is more than just a way of computing E and B fields. It was the first field theory, the first gauge theory, and a provides a deep dive into the way physical theories of nature are structured.

This is going to be a new kind of semester, in which we try to figure out how to live and learn E&M during a global pandemic. For a complete description of how we are going to do this, please see the Course Description.
