Announcements will be posted here as necessary.

This is the main website for the UIUC Physics course PHYS 325. It is the first of a 2-semester course on Classical Mechanics. The course description provides further information on the course and gives important details on our policies. Please consult the schedule to help you keep track of what is due when. Your grades will be updated in the online gradebook, please check this regularly to ensure your scores are begin recorded accurately.

Announcements

There will be no classes from 23 November - 1 December 2024 (Fall Break).

Homework 10 submission has been extended to 22 November 2024.

The second midterm exam will take place on Thursday, 14 November 2024, during class from 12:00- 13:20 Central US in 151 Loomis. It will cover topics from lecture 13 - lecture 22 (inclusive). You can find details and a practice exam here. Good luck!

The first lecture for Phys 325 will be on Tuesday, 27 August 2024, from 12:00 - 13:20 CDT in 151 Loomis.

Time and location

The course will take place in person unless instructed otherwise.
Lectures will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 - 13:20 Central US in 151 Loomis.
Discussions will take place on Mondays, starting in week 3, as listed in the section information. Make sure you attend your assigned section. For section changes, please contact the Physics Undergraduate Office.
Office hours will take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays starting in week 2.

Lecture attendance

We will take lecture attendance via gradescope. The entry code is YRRYYB.

Homework

Homework sets will become available online on Thursdays after class, starting in week 1. Homework sets are due on the following Thursday at 11:55pm Central US.
Your homework solutions have to be submitted online via gradescope. The entry code for the homework is 4JJBBV.
In general, you are allowed to use python or computer algebra software, like Maple or Mathematica, unless stated otherwise. If you do use computer algebra software, you must provide a well-formatted print of your code and attach it as part of your PDF solution.

The first homework set will be available on 29 August 2024 and is due on 5 September 2024.

Exams

There will be two midterm exams worth 15% each and one final exam worth 20% of your grade. You will find details here.

Textbooks

We will mainly use the textbook "Classical Mechanics" by John R. Taylor. This and additional references for further reading are listed under Textbooks and extra material.

Excused Absences

Please submit your excused absence no later than 10 working days from your absence via the Excused Absences application. The count begins the day of your absence.
