Dear PHYS 214 students,

Welcome to our introduction to quantum mechanics! 

Below please find some useful information on getting set up for the first day of class. This information and more can be found on the course webpage: https://courses.physics.illinois.edu/phys214/fa2022/index.html .

Things to do in preparation for this class: * Download and read Unit 1 of the prelecture notes (available on the schedule). * Make sure that you can log into smart.physics. Note that CHECKPOINT 1 IS DUE BEFORE THE FIRST LECTURE. * Log into campuswire and find a study partner. You can find the link on the "Online Links" tab of the webpage.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: All components of this class will be held synchronously. Please see: https://courses.physics.illinois.edu/phys214/fa2022/attendance.html and https://courses.physics.illinois.edu/phys214/fa2022/course-grading.html . All lectures will be recorded and posted on mediaspace.

SWAPPING SECTIONS: Many people accidentally drop themselves from the class accidentally, so be careful doing this! Note the early drop deadline for the short course. If you have any questions you can email undergrad@physics.illinois.edu , and see the webpage for details.

You'll experience the material in the following order:  - Prelecture notes (read this first, available as a PDF on the course webpage)  - Checkpoint questions due before lecture (INCLUDING THE FIRST LECTURE)  - Lecture  - Homework  - Discussion (graded on participation)  - Lab  - Two quizzes and a final exam.

Multiple exposures of the material will really help you understand the concepts in the class; if you actively participate in all these, I think you'll find the course enjoyable, or at least comprehensible. No one understands quantum mechanics on their first try!

There are 12 units over the seven weeks (2/week except the last week). This will show up as two homework assignments per week; these are designed such that each homework assignment is about half a week's worth of work and focuses mainly on its unit. Each discussion section covers the material from the week before, with the first week focusing on reviewing prerequisite material (very very important). Unlike in previous semesters, there will not be quizzes in the discussion sections; instead, you will be graded on the work you do on the discussion problems.

Office hours will be offered starting the second week of classes.   We are looking forward to sharing quantum mechanics with you. The class is pretty fun and the physics permeates many subjects.
