Detailed Course Description

Introduction to DFM methodologies and tools; material selection (new and traditional materials); designing for primary manufacturing processes (cutting fundamentals, casting, forming, and shaping); designing with plastics (snap-fits, integral hinges, etc.); design for assembly (DFA); Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). Prerequisite: ME 170. 3 undergraduate hours.

DFM methodologies and tools:

1. DFM overview/strategy

2. Quality function deployment (QFD)

3. Concept Selection

4. Product Design Specification

5. Design for assembly (DFA)

6. Design for Economic Manufacture (material removal, casting, forming, & shaping)

7. Designing with plastics (snap-fits, integral hinges, etc.)

8. Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)

9. Selection of materials (life-cycle economics)

Laboratory Projects:

1. Introduction to machine tools (in machine shop)

2. Injection Molding

3. CNC Machining

4. Sand Casting

5. Rapid Prototyping

6. Water Jet Cutting

7. Design of Experiments

8. Inspection/metrology (CMM/GD&T)

DFM Team Design Project:

Students will work in teams of 3 throughout the semester to design and build a functional prototype of a small mechanical or electro-mechanical product with your partner. The product should be of their own design and have something new or different about it; innovation will be a portion of the grade. It does not have to define a new problem; it can also provide a novel and/or economic solution to an existing problem. For example: an electromechanical toothbrush designed for use by disabled or motion-impaired, a garden hose attachment that automatically washes your car while you sleep, a shoe cleaning attachment for a vacuum cleaner, shoes that transform into a skate board……

ME: Required.

EM: TAM 270 required instead.
