ENG 199 TIG - TIG Welding for Engineers

Section Description
Students will learn, from an engineer?s point of view, the theory and practice behind safely operating a TIG welder to create high strength joints in steel. The curriculum covers basic history of electro-arc welding as well as the properties of stick, MIG, and TIG welding. Students will develop the skills to prepare, create, and troubleshoot TIG welds in steel. Students will also weld a test joint to withstand mechanical force testing. This course is designed, in part, to help engineers understand manufacturability and processes involved in realizing their designs. Meeting dates are arranged with instructor. Class meets for two weeks. Week one has lecture Sunday from 6:00 pm to 10:30 pm, and hands-on instruction on either Tuesday or Thursday from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. Week two has a shorter lecture from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm and identical hands-on instruction times. Course takes place in the Engineering Student Projects Lab.
