Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is the subject of building electronic systems which will work as intended in an electromagnetic environment. The systems shall not cause electromagnetic interference (EMI). Also, they are not susceptible to EMI from themselves or other systems. This course is designed to provide fundamental understanding of electromagnetic sources, different coupling mechanisms, how electronic devices are affected by the electromagnetic interference, and how to design electronic systems that comply with EMC standards. Topics range from EMC requirements for electronic systems; sources of electromagnetic noises; coupling mechanisms; radiated and conducted emissions and susceptibility; crosstalk, grounding, and shielding; as well as system design for EMC.
This course provides students with fundamental knowledge of three major aspects of EMC: electromagnetic sources, coupling mechanisms, and electromagnetic immunity. Advanced topics such as grounding and shielding, electrostatic discharge, and system design for EMC are also addressed. Students learn how to identify and mitigate electromagnetic noise, minimize electromagnetic coupling between electronic devices, and design electronic systems to avoid EMI problems and ensure EMC. The course contains significant components of categories (1), (2), and (6) under Criterion 3, ABET Program Outcomes and Assessment. After the class, students should be able to:
