Title: AIs in the world: teammates, rivals, and scorecards. What impact does computing technology have on the world - and what are ways that computer science researchers can help improve the societal consequences of tools they create? Almost as long as computing tools have existed, researchers have studied how these tools can shape and be shaped by society. In this class, we will give students the context to understand the history of these issues, as well as an understanding of current trends in research on the societal impact of artificial intelligence. This course will focus on three main topics: 1) human-algorithm collaboration (the study of designing AI tools that work well with humans in the loop, rather than in isolation), 2) multi-AI interaction (the study of agentic teams), and 3) benchmark and leaderboard design (designing evaluation mechanisms, such as LMArena, that are helpful for consumers and give good incentives for model-creators).
