CEE 598 GFO - Generalized FEM

Subject offerings of new and developing areas of knowledge in civil and environmental engineering intended to augment the existing curriculum. Section Description

Theory and applications of Generalized/eXtended Finite Element Methods: high-order approximations, conditioning control, verification and validation, implementation in research and commercial software, solution of 2-D and 3-D fracture mechanics problems, problems with weak discontinuities, and multiscale problems. Students will gain hands-on experience with a 3D Generalized FEM software package used to explore and apply the method to representative example problems. Prerequisite: Introductory finite element method course: CEE 570, AE 420, ME 471, or equivalent, or approval of the instructor.
