Subject offerings of new and developing areas of knowledge in bioengineering intended to augment the existing curriculum. See Class Schedule or departmental course information for topics and prerequisites. Course Information: 1 to 4 undergraduate hours. 1 to 4 graduate hours. May be repeated in the same or separate terms if topics vary to a maximum of 12 hours, but no more than 8 in any one term.

Section Description

Systems biology is the study of systems of biological components, which may be molecules, cells, organisms or entire species. Being highly complex, their behaviors are hard to predict from the properties of individual parts. Instead, it often requires holistic, quantitative measurements mathematical modeling of the groups of the interacting components. This course offers an introduction to the fundamental concepts, quantitative characterizations, and modeling methodologies underlying systems biology. Systems of study include modules and global structures ubiquitous in gene regulation, metabolism and signal transduction. Examples include functional modules such as feed-forward loops, switches and oscillators and systems composed of these modules. Mathematical models based on differential equations are used throughout the course to describe the dynamics of biological systems.
